“There is a voice that doesn't use words. Listen” (Rumi). As I sat in class Friday our instructor was reminding us of the importance of our role to support, encourage and empower others and to always be looking for what we could give a way, responsibilities to invite others to do; encouraging others to take part. She used the image of football reminding us all to be coaches not quarterbacks. In this year like no other, when our activities and movements have been limited, intentional listening has continued to be such a great gift. On the phone, via text, email, facetime, Zoom, engaged in podcasts, books, YouTube listening is a consistent requirement. Active listening! What are you listening to and for today? God, yourself, other people, creation? Welcome to spring and hope rising in all of us. Listen to all the fresh new sounds of spring today—snow melting, birds singing, people enjoying being outside. As you observe listen with all of your senses and your heart. We are getting through this pandemic.
Have you been listening to God’s call on your heart? Are there some ways you are wondering about helping to lift up Grace United Church and the vision of “engaging the community?” Our many ministries, outreaches, groups, teams and committees all welcome you to get involved. We are particularly in need of some folks to help out on the Ministry and Personnel Committee, to encourage and support our staff, check-in on how they are doing, help review job descriptions and continue to lift up the work of our community of faith. If you are excited about supporting a future minister, the process of becoming an approved Supervised Ministry of Education site is moving forward.
We are in need of some people who will be keen to meet with a candidate as a support and encouragement as part of a lay supervision team. We are eager to reimagine the Ministry of Compassion outreaches and what that emerging might be like. As we anticipate welcoming people back into our building, we need people to join our property committee to prepare our building. Agape café, movie nights, women on the move, the men’s group, scouting movement, craft and chat, re-opening, Christian education, GPIF, outreach near and far. Explore how your ministry can grow at Grace. It takes a village. Contact the office, or any board member or let me know.
In continued efforts to stay safe, we remain closed to in-person worship but are hopeful you will participate in the covenanting service tomorrow between you, Grace United Church, me, and East Central Ontario Regional Council. Kathleen Whyte, our liaison, and an Assembly of Elder member is our representative from ECORC. In her message, Kathleen will be honouring that tomorrow is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
